How do I use a step ladder safely?
Step ladders are generally very sturdy and easy to use, whether you’re at a commercial workspace or at home by yourself. They are ideal if you are looking to reach a short height; i.e when painting a wall, cleaning a window or redecorating inside the house.
Despite its sturdy build, climbing up is dangerous- proper measures must be followed to ensure that you stay safe. At AHL Ladders, our many years of experience has given us a good insight into handling the equipment. Without further ado, here are some important tips on how to use a step ladder properly and safely.
Checking your step ladder
Starting from the bottom of your ladder, check its surface to make sure that it is in the best possible condition.
Ladder feet – The feet of the ladder should not be damaged or worn in any way, because this could cause it to wobble and slip when weight is put on it. Check the bottom of the feet to make sure that no rubble/soil is stuck at the bottom, because if so, the ladder will be uneven and unstable.
Ladder rungs – Make sure all the rungs of the ladder are all intact and now loose/damaged. A broken rung can lead to disastrous consequences when you are putting your weight on it.
Ladder platform – All step ladders have a small platform, make sure that it is not damaged or buckled.
Climbing safely
The first thing to do when placing the ladder where you want is to check its stability. Take a minute to make sure that all ladder feet are on a level, firm and non-slippery surface.
When you begin climbing, ensure that you face the step ladder. Keep your body centered as well, to remain balanced and lessen the chance of the ladder wobbling.
Always remember to maintain a firm grip by using both hands when climbing the ladder. No matter how sturdy the ladder is or how short the height, it’s important not to be careless when it comes to our safety.
General safety tips
- Make sure the height of the step ladder is appropriate for the task. Overreaching can be hazardous.
- Standing, sitting or putting unnecessary weight on the platform of the step ladder can lead to it becoming damaged.
- Step ladders are generally meant to hold the weight of one person, so make sure you don’t overload it.
- Remember not to place a step ladder on unstable surfaces like boxes, slippery floors etc.
